The Delta trike is not designed for speed, its design was for pleasure riding. As far as a Delta being unstable, it's probably no more unstable than a Tadpole if used correctly. If you want to run to the store or if you like taking your time and ride some trails they are a great trike. I know a couple that both ride Kettwiesels and on occasion use them as a tandem and travel and there great.
Everyone has different needs, Just do your research and make the right choice for you and your needs that's what counts.

My wife has a Hase Lepus you can fold it and it has hydraulic brakes on all three wheels. The best part that I like is you can park it standing up so there is some room for me to park my recumbents. I don’t ride her trike but have tried a short trip one good thing is the turning radius. You can connect it with another trike but you can also connect it with a 2 wheeler and make a tandem with a special cobbler.
I sell recumbents but not this brand but don’t mind giving credit to a good product. I sell tadpoles and have tested them also but only short trips so I’m not going to comment on the handling. I prefer riding on 2 wheels and have also started on one wheel.

One big advantage of the "old fart" delta trike (Dakota brand) that I have is that it will carry far more weight and volume than the lighter"technical" trikes. It would not want to go as fast under any circumstances as a hard turn at 15-20 mph would be painful in the extreme. In any case a turn that would be a definite roll-over on a Dakota, would not raise a wheel on a Catrike .

However on grass yards or dirt roads, much less deeper puddles and mud common place in rural settings the larger wheels and much greater clearance, to say nothing of riding above the dust, might well make the Dakota preferable by far if that was where you were riding.

In my old newspaper boy days I would start out from the house with as much as 250 newspapers on an old one speed Schwinn on a route that took me about 8 miles to deliver. That would have been easier on the Dakota but impossible on the Catrike without pulling a trailer.

Late getting into this conversation and not meaning to start anything other than discussion...

I like trikes... I don't currently own one, but would if the situation were such that I could. However, I'm not sure I would commute on a trike. I say that just because I know how close cars come to me sometimes on two wheels and it can be frightening. Even with two lanes of traffic in each direction, about every third car insists on being in the right lane and won't give an inch. The other issue is rough roads. SoCal is notorious for chopped up streets. Dodging potholes with two wheels is tough enough, with three, I can't imagine it.

Before you get too fired up, know that I would love to have a trike, enclosed in a velomobile. Heck, I think it would be fun to ride one without the shell. I'm just not sold on the safety of riding one on SoCal streets. I sure don't see many trikes on the streets and there's probably a reason for that.

I understand your concerns about riding a trike in traffic but I think if you'll find that they're not justified. Most people have the same concern before they get out on the road and they find out that it's safer than riding a bike or bent. Cars give you a much wider berth than when your riding a bike, I very seldom have a car come close. I ride 4 and 6 lane traffic in Leesburg when shopping and sometimes pull my trailer and not have problems.
The problem with riding a bike is that people driving cars always have the attitude they can squeeze buy you and on a trike they know they can't so they wait until it's clear before passing. I'll take a trike to a bike anytime.

I have no reason not to believe you.... Other than my own doubts. I know that trikes have grown a lot in popularity and I see them on the bike paths around here, but never on the streets. What I'm saying is; I don't think I'm alone in my paranoia! People around here are crazy!

I'd sure love to try commuting by trike and I'd love to have a velomobile... I could see a car driver giving a wide berth, just to see what that thing is!

No your not alone with your paranoia. That's exactly what happens when your ride a trike, people tend to break there necks to see what the thing is and you end up with an extra wide berth. I also have wondered if they think it's a kid riding the thing and it makes them a little more cautious.

Yeah - they'd give a wide berth just so they could get the whole trike in the viewfinder of their cell phone camera...

I get some of that, anyway, on a two wheel recumbent. Lots of people are just a$$holes and will buzz you no matter what you're riding.

I almost caused an accident recently - I was riding along, minding my own biz and a guy in a minivan was obviously looking at that old fart on that damfool La-z-boy bike and almost ran into the truck in front of him who was waiting for me to go by so he could turn right...
