I saw "Slime" mentioned on this thread, sort of in passing, and wondered if that would be a worthwhile investment for someone who does not have to contend with sand burrs or goatheads but would like a little extra insurance against flats, particularly at 4:30 AM on the way to work? Not that I know anyone like that, just speaking hypothetically... Rolling Eyes

Slime, IMHO, is messy and not worth the bother. If you puncture, it will eventually clot up the hole, but until it does, it gets all over everything. But, as always, YMMV.

That is what I found with my lawnmower, the green goo ............ all over the place.

Life is full of crappy little compromises. In a target rich environment (for goatheads) the weight and mess hassle of Slime is definitely worth it. If all you want is a little extra insurance, maybe Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and/or thorn tubes are the way to go.

I have a friend that uses the thornproof tubes and swears by them. He calls them "run flats". They are pretty heavy, but he doesn't get very many flats. He still gets them, but few and far between.

I run Continental Gatorskin tires and don't get too many flats. Of course, now that I've said that.... affraid

In Phoenix LBS's, thornproof tubes are almost standard. I don't know of a single shop who sells new bikes without them.

Knock on wood, I have had only two flats in all of the riding I have done here. One was as a result of my running over some glass, and the other was as a result of MY bad: I pinched the tube when I put new tires and tubes on my Batavus Course.
