Chain breakage is rare, but what is not so rare is a sticky link which causes problems with the transmission. A chain breaker can loosen it up again. It can be the difference between riding and pushing.

Thanks, Walt. I will go ahead and get a chain tool and kit then.

The Road Morph should be on its way, so I'll stick with it.

Hm. Okay. So.... do it right, I guess. Although, in 100-degree heat I reckon the quickest fix is the best. *S*

What is a sand spur?

Good point, Garry. Guess a good quality chain lube should prevent link stickage though, right?

The right pump will not leave you red faced. The road morph will take a tire up to 100 PSI quickly and easily. I'm not a believer in CO2. I've known guys that went out with two cartridges and ended up phoning in the troops. A good pump will never fail you.

The preglued patches are like pissing into the wind. THe stars have to be perfectly aligned and you have to do a perfect job of application or they won't stick. Why bother? If you're going to patch a tube, there nothing as sure as a properly vulcanizd patch. After a tube has been patched a few times, I replace them.. You always hope you don't have to patch on the roadside, but you go prepared to do so. It's far better to swap tubes and do your patching at home with a beer. I usually let the punctured tubes pile up and patch several at one time.

Chain breakage is rare, but it does happen. I used to carry a chain tool and used it once for something that should have never happened to start with. The chain tool found its way out of my bag. I was the kind that could darned near overhaul a bike with all the tools I carried. I found I could ride much faster with only minimalistic (and realistic) tools. Embarassed

You'll find your own comfort level with what you carry, though... Use what we say as a guideline and decide for yourself what you need and don't need.

Again, this is something that should be sorted out in the man cave. A sticky link can be sorted out easily by grabbing the chain in both hands and flexing the chain side to side. Sticky links usually occur when chains are put on the bike with old school pins. That's why I prefer chains with quick links, like SRAM, or KMC. SRAM is my favorite.

What is a sand spur?

A small thing with multiple puncture points that we find down south. I guess similar to a "Goat Head"

Yep, goat heads are the work of the devil. Also, glass drink containers. Who the HELL thought up that brilliant idea? OK, so I like my beer in glass, too, but I think they should call out the CSI unit and find the perp that throws his or her bottles out the window. This should be a hangin' offense!

Ah, THOSE things! I had an encounter with the buggers down near Patrick Air Force Base in '81. Walking barefoot, I quickly found out that a size 15 foot can pick up quite a few of those rascals. OUCH!!!!
