Extensions

Post by BCTriker on Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:07 pm

Anyone with thoughts or experiances with the Catrike rear extensions, fitting a 26" rear wheel(for a Cat Trail) sounds interesting. As well a 1.75 tire would hopefully smooth out some of those trails I ride. While getting higher speeds with my DualDrive can't be helped, I'll just have to live with it. Carrying another size tube is no hardship as I usually carry at least 3 new tubes, pump etc. in my panniers now. Is there a conversion for a rear rack (just thought of it) I really need my panniers, where I live its layer on layer off then on or off......your thoughts
Thankyou........Rob

I put the 26" wheel on my TerraTrike Zoomer, same principal, an extension to the dropouts. I switched from the 40 psi cheap-o tires to 100 psi Schwalbe Marathons at the same time so I can't tell if the ride got any smoother but the pedal effort seemed to go down. I did notice a little more flex in the rear when I first put it on but I raced the trike this weekend with no ill effects. As for a rack I bought a mountain bike rack and made the front braces out of aluminum that I picked up at the big box hardware store. I don't know where the rack mounts on a Catrike but it should be similar.

Catrike has actually started producing wheel extension kits:

Utah Trikes Catrike Wheel Extensions.

I know one guy who has bought them and he says they are great.

Hi.... I knew Catrike had very recently offered the extensions. Thanks BluesCat, Racer46, the CatTrail came with Schwalbe 20"Marathon Racers all around, however I changed the rear to the Marathon Plus. I don't think I'll change out the the rear yet but its an interesting possibilty down the road. I still really enjoy riding trails with my Cat and guess that 20"tires would work better on the different terrain I encounter. I'm thinking I'd get a better response with a 20" tire than that of a 26"tire should I lose traction, like on a hill or the like.
