I didn't quite know where to put this so I put it here. Please don't read anything into it, I didn't put it here for that. I just enjoyed it and thought others might too.

Thoughts on my bike Empty Re: Thoughts on my bike

I tell you what, today was the first day of a one week vacation ... and I haven't been able to ride for about three days now.

The kids were up from southern Arizona with the new baby, they left to go back on Wednesday. My son called me Wednesday evening and said everyone had a cold. My wife was coming down with it, too. I was really happy I didn't seem to be affected ... Then Friday came and I've been miserable ever since.

Of course, riding was out of the question.

Every time this happens I am amazed at how much getting on one of the bikes means to me. I'm not a church-going guy, but of course I still need a dose of daily quiet contemplation. I will turn the cell phone on "silent"; slide into the seat of Bluetiful for an exhilarating half hour of dashing down the local streets; or hop onto The Roadley and negotiate some half-paved road somewhere nearby.

When I am done, I am prepared to face the day and whatever travails await. My wife has even noticed that without a good bike ride I turn into an unapologetic grump, and she is really used to me by now!

Another thought that comes to me is this: Why do countries around the world beat out the U.S. as far as life expectancy goes:

List of countries by life expectancy

The U.S. scores a miserable 35 on that list. Maybe it has something to do with how lazy and fat we have become, and how really lazy and fat we have allowed our kids to become?

I agree, my mind often wonders when I ride. I wish I still lived around more mountainous terrain, I used to absolutely love riding in the mountains. I'd often get lost in my mind. I would round a bend and some sort of mountain vista would appear and I would just stop and sit there and look. I'd look at everything and I'd look at nothing. The Blue Ridge Parkway is great for that. That's another reason I really like touring, especially touring new destinations, they're great for cleansing the soul so to speak. Whoa....time to stop, getting way, way OT!
