Re: July Ride
Here's a Google Map of the ride start location. We park at the far west end of the park, near the ball diamonds. They do not charge for entry to this part of the park. You can switch to Sattelite view to see where the entrance is.

Re: July Ride
I guess this is as good a spot as any to write that I'm signed up here and keeping an eye on this forum. Hi all!
The July ride sounds good and hopefully I'll be in better shape to keep up next time. As I told Steve as we rode back I've essentially not ridden a bike, any bike, in 15 years. The few times I tried on my DF it was too painful to go more than five miles or so. Got the VK2 the beginning of May but had two weeks off due to another back injury, so I only had about 100 miles total last weekend. Oh, and I tripped on a rock and the sun was in my eyes.
Looking forward to getting 'bent legs.

Welcome Ted!
You did fine! That's the great thing about our group is; we don't worry about such things. Regroups are great because they give you more time to visit and ogle the bikes!

Ted:
That's the neat about riding recumbents, it's kinda like classic muscle cars: you have the horsepower to do over a hundred miles an hour, but hardly anybody does that; mostly just cruise to parking lots and shoot the breeze and look over the other guy's car.

Re: July Ride
I rode the route for the July ride today. According to my Garmin history it's about 43.5 miles round trip. I say "about" because I started from home another five miles up the SART and my round trip was 53.5 miles (86 km). Trail conditions are excellent all the way except for the middle bridge (of three) which seems to have looser boards. It's a bouncy, uneasy ride across.
Negotiating the tight turns onto the bridges (and the Katella crossing) proved challenging for me. I think I was about 50/50 making it or having to stop and pick up the bike. I need more practice with low-speed tight turns on my VK2 lowracer. A bit more speed and less timidity is called for, I think.
The Super Burger at Newport Burgers is big, very tasty, and expensive. It was something over $8 for the burger (which included fries) and a medium Sprite. But even with the high prices I wonder how they stay in business. I was there for most of the noon lunch hour and they had exactly four customers, including me. Guess they make it up on weekends when the tourists and local beach goers flock in.
I'm tired and sore. More of these longer rides are needed to get me in shape.

Re: July Ride
Hey Guys,
Right now I'm nursing a pulled something or other, inside of the knee or upper calf muscle.
And somehow I caught a nasty little cold Hopefully all of this drama will be over for our next ride. I've been off of the bike for 4 days now and it's starting to bother me. I'm really looking forward to our next ride!

Heal up quick, my friend!
Ted- Newport Burger is usually pretty busy on the weekend. Not so busy you can't get in there.... Just busy. Glad you're getting in some miles!

Newport burgers does do a better business on weekends
I was there on Tuesday with my Strada
Yes , the bridges take some getting used to, but practice makes perfect

Re: July Ride
Really wish I could make it this month, but the combination of having a gig Friday night (which makes getting from Tarzana to Anaheim by 8:30 very unlikely) and not having my Trail yet means I won't get to meet y'all 'til next month.

Re: July Ride
What a great group we had today! 16 riders joined us and we saw another 5 recumbents on the path. I heard one rider ask if there was a recumbent convention today! How cool is that?!!?
I got a little bit humbled today... We had some strong riders and while I managed to hang with the front riders..... It was barely. Good GAWD! We rolled 22-25 all the way back from the beach....up stream! I got the feeling those guys were just cruising, too. I was working! Time to step up the training!

Re: July Ride
Ok everyone, here are some ride photo's:
http://www.pbase.com/salbano/072009
To sum up the ride today - it was great! Great seeing some familiar faces, and some new ones! It was quite a show of Bents on the old SART! Our pace was a little faster than usual, but it was a beautiful day, and it's fun to let your hair down on this bike path! One of the more notable things today was watching the 2 Carbents in action. I was going along about 22-23mph when I heard them, saw them blow past, and disappear! Stopping at Newport Burger is always fun. The ride back was also kind of fast, but we did have a regroup spot.
Lots of fun, lots of Bents! Stay tuned for our next adventure!
