| Hi everyone, I am a retired senior citizen and have been cycling since I was a teenager. I started riding bents about 13 years ago after the cycling club I belonged to in Atlanta, invited some bent owners to bring their bikes down so that we could learn about them. I bought a BikeE a couple of months later, and then a Rans Tailwind which I still have and love riding. I live in Atlanta, and have a park next to my home with a 1 1/2 mile hilly loop, and I am about 22 miles fro the Silver Comet Trail which is the longest Rails to Trail in the Southeast going about 70 miles one way. I ride about 100+ miles per week and have a dog trailer that I pull a 45 pound dog in, that I use about once or twice a week. The combination of the dog and trailer weighs about 75 pounds, so I get a good workout doing that, especially since Atlanta is very hilly. Bob |

| Welcome, Captain! Over in the Trikes section there was a whole thread about carrying your dog on the bike. You may find it interesting, even though it sounds like you have your setup all in place. _________________ BluesCat -----> 2008 Sun EZ Sport CX - "Bluetiful", 2001 Giant Yukon SE - "The Roadley", 1986 Batavus Course - "DutchGrl"---------0 ---------\__^o\ ------(*)`"''"""(*) |

| A big, hearty welcome to another Dixie 'bent rider! You'll find us to be a great bunch of folks, if a little goofy at times . _________________ Burn more carbohydrates, fewer hydrocarbons

| Welcome Captain. Nice bike & good looking dog. I would like to do the Silver Comet one day but I need to build my hill legs. Kind of hard to do in flat Florida. I was shooting for 40 miles a week with a goal of 2000 for the year. I had a couple of months of under 100 miles and now have a little catching up to do. I've only been riding again since last September. _________________ Pete

I lived in Hollywood Florida for 11 years and used to ride about 125 miles a week there. When I moved to Atlanta, I almost stopped riding altogether, because it is really hilly up here. The Silver Comet is a rails to trail and while there are a few up and downgrades, there are really no hills to speak of for at least the first 50 miles or so. You shouldn''t have any trouble.
Here is an elevation profile for the Silver Comet and you can see over the course of miles, the altitude only varies by 2-3 hundred feet.

| captainbob: We have two pets which we got at the premier No-Kill shelter in Arizona: The Arizona Animal Welfare League. The League was set up with the help of the late Amanda Blake ("Miss Kitty" of Gunsmoke fame). Both of the pets --- our big yellow Labrador mix and our orange Maine Coon longhair cat --- are probably the sweetest pets I have ever known. Although family financial conditions prevented us from doing something last year and this year, we have always sent some holiday contributions to the League and the Arizona Humane Society. _________________ BluesCat -----> 2008 Sun EZ Sport CX - "Bluetiful", 2001 Giant Yukon SE - "The Roadley", 1986 Batavus Course - "DutchGrl"---------0 ---------\__^o\ ------(*)`"''"""(*) |

Captainbob,
You are quite correct in that there is only about 200 feet of elevation change over the entire trail. The total amount of climbing is just under 3800 feet and the max grade is under 4%. Unfortunately my last longish ride of 54 miles only had 381 ft. of elevation change, mostly for the 8 overpasses we had to climb, and that, along with the heat, just about killed me. I'm going to have to get some hill time in over he winter, maybe in Clarmont or Mt. Dora. _________________ Pete
