PostSubject: flag mounting   Mon Jan 26, 2009 9:17 pm

I was visiting my daughter out of town and while browsing thru the local farm equipment store ran across something even I could use.
I found some flags that were meant to mount on tractors to warn about slow moving vechicles. Brain in action. Why wouldn't this work on my bike?
I bought it and now have to mount it. I can do it alright but before I start maybe someone else has already done it. If so how about some pictures of how you did it?
Its not a difficult project but if its been done why should I re engineer it?
thanks

I'm not familiar with the Rans seat so the way I have the flag on my Infinity probably won't work. The vertical seat tube is capped and there is a hole in the center. I put the flag into the hole and it slides down into the tube holding it in place. On the wife's EZ-Rider there is a flag holder which attaches to the rear axle. My new EZ-Speedster has disc brakes so the flag holder on the axle won't work. I'm going to have to come up with another way on that one.

I've had one mounted on my Rocket since 2001. I mounted a standard orange flag in the middle of the seat between the front and back parts. I put loop of a backpack over the flag pole and the shoulder straps over the seat back. I drilled a hole in the safety triangle to accept the end of a small bungee cord. The other end of the bungee cord is attached to the wires at the top middle of the seat back and wound around the flag. A cord is attached to a lower hole drilled in the safety triangle with a clip that attaches to a low part of the backpack. I think it might be hard to conceive without pictures but I don't think I can attach pictures to this message. I have never taken pictures of it before but that would not be a problem.

There is a pipe clamp in Lowes, called a touchdown clamp that is used for attaching pipes (of all things) at 90 degrees to an object. I use this type of clamp to hold my over-sized flashlights to my OCR.

Heh heh. I love flags! Go over to the DALMAC forum - that ride is famous/imfamous for making all participants mount a 6' flag on their bikes as they ride the event. Although everyone finds a variation, the simple mount that comes with a cheap whip/flag is a simple plate that slips down between the (a, for you deltas) axle nut and the dropout.

I routinely offer a flag with the bikes I build and sell - I get them at the local Farm and Fleet store at $6 each. I do not use the axle mount, though I do use the little sheet metal plate that comes with the flag. I cutoff the tabs, drill a small hole, and use a scrounged keeper clamp from an old coaster brake bike to mount the plate onto the chainstay of my bike. Easy.

I have added pictures to the gallery of the modifications I made to my Rocket including the addition of the safety triangle.
