With the new Garmin eTrex mount on my EZ Sport, I decided to head out on Sunday morning, 11/08/09, and explore new routes to work. I wanted to see if I could find more sedate, local neighborhood streets to ride on. In the process, I had two revelations:

1. GPS units are cool, and not just the toys I have always considered them to be.

2. I've always thought that streets with marked bike lanes were safer than streets simply designated as bike routes with signs but no paint to show the bike ...

It's hovered around 110° F all week, and usually that only affects me when the humidity is up there, but it's been pretty dry. Even getting into my car in the afternoon is brutal. Don't know what it is, but maybe the fact that there hasn't been a lot of wind has something to do with it.

Introduction

Over in the Lighting topic of the Electronic's section, Nightturkey describes his idyllic commute through the Carolina woods. Trying to be a comedian, and having everyone believe I've got it much rougher in the big city, I described my own commuter ride through the early morning streets of Phoenix in much more ... colorful ... terms.

Actually, my bicycle commute beats driving any day. So, because of my guilt and to set the record straight, I thought I'd work up a post ...

Today (Tuesday) was my first ride in for the week. I got myself all showered and feeling good, then went to get myself dressed. No pants. Apparently, I overlooked packing pants! I had everything else, but NO PANTS! I was mortified.

I rode my bike to work yesterday. I kind of knew I was in trouble when I left the house. I dropped into the Santa Ana River wash, heading north into Hghland and noticed a bit of a breeze. Ordinarily, a breeze wouldn't bother me, but where I work is in Rialto, in what is commonly referred to as the wind tunnel. When the Santa Anas get to blowing, it will be worst at the foothills to the mountains, right where we are. So, I can't say I was terribly surprised at the gale force winds as I neared ...

Bike Commuters Benefit From Changes in Tax Law

Tuesday January 6, 2009

Added provision means cash back for those who bike to work

New in 2009 is a provision in the US tax code that allows bike commuters to be reimbursed up to $20 per month for expenses tied to their bike commuting from participating employers.

The reimbursements can be for just about anything related to bike commuting - from replacement tires to routine tune-ups at the bike shop to a whole new bike.

We've all had people say or ask funny stuff about our bikes. Today, I had a kid ask me a question that takes the cake.

I passed him on his skateboard about 3/4 of a block before the stoplight. I was moving along pretty good, maybe 21-22 mph. I roll up to the stop light and as I'm waiting for it to change, he rolls up and asks me if my bike is street legal!

I told him it was, but it shouldn't be!

I don't ride on rainy days. Not on purpose, anyway I do get into a lot of wind this time of year with the Santa Anas. The heat is kind of a thing during the summer months, but it's really just July through mid September.
