Hey guys,

Just checking in after my tour. It's been a week since I've been back but I'm still mentally and emotionally on the road. I meant to send this link before, but spaced it with all I had to do to get ready.

http://www.theroadlespedaled.com/

It's a work in progress, but one of these days I'll get it up to speed, hopefully before I do the next one (but maybe not since the next one is potentially in December!).

Hey all,

I've been AWOL for quite some time. Sorry! Was motivated to get back in touch after riding the Withlacoochee in the Rails to Trails ride yesterday. I typically ride with DFers, so it was an amazing experience to ride Sunday in the majority! After years of yearning, I've finally purchased my trike, a Trice Q, which I had to order and am picking it up on Saturday. I'm doing my first tour beginning October 25th, riding from Savannah to St. Augustine. I'm a complete touring newbie ...

What do you think these should be great for commuters the drivers might notice you?

Maybe not so good for a racer there might be some drag?

It was such a nice day today that I had to go back down and ride along the National Seashore. It's such a great place to ride. I never get tired of the views down here. The best part is that there is hardly any traffic on weekdays. Even during Spring Break!

Surf fishing, they catch a lot of Pompano down here. The boat is cruising the shoreline looking for Cobia, they're due any day now.

Nobody in front of me.

No one behind me.

Just above me!

It was a day worth saving.

The whole bloomin' town looks like a picture postcard! Of course I know that a town will put its best face on its tourist website, but the place has my vote for an RRSC meet-n-greet, just in case we all win the lottery and can afford to get over there ...in "sommer", not "vinter"...

The route is somewhere between 85 and 90 miles, so I can't exactly call it a Century, but it will be by far the longest one-day ride this fat old fart has ever attempted. I plan on leaving the little town of Prosperity around 6:00 in the morning on Saturday 10/17 (or 10/24 if it rains on the 17th) and poking my way around the lake, taking many rests (and pictures) along the journey.
I just got a TerraCycle Idler for my Stratus. I don't really know why, there was/is nothing wrong with the stock one from Rans but I've heard some good things about the ones from TerraCycle, it was at a decent price, plus, they look good. I'm also planning on some touring with this bike and I thought this would lessen any chance of idler falure. I was wondering if anyone else has added one to their rides? What if anything did you notice different?

Thanks for the input.

I'm off this weekend with nothing to do except go to the National Shrimp Festival http://www.nationalshrimpfestival.com/ Well...the weather is starting to cool off so why don't I ride down to Fort Pickens along the National Seashore http://www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/fort-pickens.htm So, I set up the Startus for the short trip. I'll ride to Ft. Pickens on Friday, stay along the beach Friday night and ride back on Saturday. Heck the wife won't care she's working ...

Sometime in the future, I will be in the market for a trike. My question is about the size of the rear wheel. It would seem that a 26" rear wheel would be the way to go. My logic says for at least 2 reasons it would be better. First the larger wheel would give a better ride, and maybe a little faster. Second, it would get the derailer higher and safer, and more out of the dirt and grit.

Who of us while riding hasnt heard a young kid yell "cool bike"? That would almost never been yelled at even a $5000 DF bike rider. Then at a local race that I rode to, I was setting there watching. One of the racers in full race kit (hundreds of dollars in duds) rode up at the end of his race. He was alway available for questions and comment. There were tours of the factory, and we were able to ride all the different bikes. The Sat ride was excellent. True to Kansas the 40 mile ride was mostly flat. Sat evening we were all invited to Randy's house and had a fantastic BBQ and genuine feast around the pool.

The brake levers on my Zoomer were rattling. I diagnosed the problem as the clip holding the brake cable being loose and rattling when I went over bumps. I didn’t see a way to tighten up the rivet that holds the clip. So last Friday I took a trip to my LBS, who was having a sale and bought a nice new pair of Avid Speed Dial 7 levers for $22. Not a bad deal.

Today while rummaging around in the garage I came across a box and I couldn’t remember what was in it. Upon opening the box ...

Why and how long are the racing bike snobs going to persist in the ban of recumbents in bike races? This goes clear back to the 1934 self serving ruling against recumbents, mainly by the french.

This kind of ruling would have kept us using slide rules instead of using computers!!!

Kudos to RAAM and RANS showing that recumbents can compete. The RANS team even exploded the theory that bents cant climb. In some of the mountain legs they even improved their lead.

Feel free to add your own learning experiences.

47 degrees = 38 degrees, with wind chill, when you’re riding down a hill at 30 mph. Which is pretty darn cold when you’re wearing shorts & a sweat shirt. Wind blowing up the leg of your shorts will make the boys numb with cold.

When clipping in, if something doesn’t feel right, stop and take a look. Do this before one of the screws holding the cleat to the shoe comes out, leaving the cleat free to rotate around the other screw. ...

I ride for a multitude of reasons. I'll list some of them.

1) The biggest reason I ride is for sheer enjoyment and thrill I get when I ride.

2) Travel/Socialize, I like to tour and visit new areas on my bike, I like to attend different group rides/rallies and mingle with other people of like interests.

3) Transportation, I commute ...

I know I have a hard time motivating myself in the winter when it gets down into the mid 50's but I don't seem to have any problems riding in the summer when the heat index could be double that! Yea, I get awfull hot but the Camelback ...

Since for the most part bicycle racing is given as much press as a tiddly winks contest. For those of you that didnt get the word, the Rans team won the four man RAAM trophy. The team rode the X-stream LWB bike. On one of the RAAM daily pages, the writer said the RANS team exploded the myth that recumbents cant climb.
Feet falling asleep.

Hey guys, I have a question/problem. Anyone had problems with your feet falling asleep while on a ride. Lately, both of mine have been doing at. Usually after about 30 miles. I can stop, work it out and ride again, only to have them do it again in a few miles. I'm currently using mountain bike shoes, and Shimano SPD pedals. These same pedals on my road bike with road bike shoes has been great, but maybe not on my Rocket?

Any suggestions or ideas?
