I regularly visit the site CommuteByBike.com, because it very often has interesting articles and advice on one of my main bicycling activities, commuting. Recently, one of the writers there, Bike Shop Girl, started a series of articles about Building Your Perfect Commuter Bike. In one article, Bike Type, I naturally put in my vote for recumbents as the ideal bike type. My opinion was met with this response by a fellow named jamesmallon:

They voted down one amendment and withdrew a second one which would have eliminated bicycle infrastructure funding/improvements from the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) program as "unnecessary and burdensome ... highway beautification" enhancements.

These amendments were proposed by Republican Senators Coburn of OK and McCain of AZ, the same two clowns who wrote a manifesto called Out of Gas which, in essence, called bicycles unimportant to our transportation ...

Was riding home from work, approaching a red light which had been red a really long time. Slowed, saw that the "Don't Walk" sign had just turned solid red for the cross traffic. Looked right ... no cars. Looked left ... a big SUV was about a half a block from the intersection, going something over the 30 mph speed limit. Figured the guy could and would stop, but unclipped anyway.

The light turned yellow, and the SUV driver was one of these jerks who interpret traffic ...

I just got a chance to look at my latest issue of Bicycling magazine (April, 2009).

Cover story is about a Buyer's Guide inside, says "With 127 bikes, this compendium offers something for every cyclist, from the entry-level up to the fantasy ride." (Emphasis is mine.)

Yup, saw a Fondriest TF1 Anniversary road bike in there, complete for $13,000. They also had a $120 Giant Little Giant kid's tricycle ...

... ... ... And not a single recumbent ... ... ... ...

Part of the 17-point "Green Phoenix" plan Mayor Phil Gordon is announcing includes a heavy dose of improvements to the city's bicycling infrastructure:

Green Phoenix Announcement

This is good news, because it means great improvements to the city's extensive, multi-use irrigation canal system which will allow cyclists to avoid a lot of heavy traffic.

Here is the question. When you ride your recumbent on a rail-trail and come to a cross street with a stop-sign, do you always stop because the sign is there? Or, do you see that no car is too close and you pound on the pedals and go rolling through with no stop at all?.....

I am a trustee on a joint committee created by the city of Wayland and Wayland Township, both of which are located half way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan which is planning to build a rail trail connecting the rail trail complex centered on the Grand Rapids and points north and west with the complex running from South Haven through Kalamazoo to Battle Creek and maybe on to Jackson. Our trail will be built on the old Interurban light rail right of way that is owned by Consumers Energy. ...
