The Silver Comet ( http://www.traillink.com/ViewTrail.aspx?AcctID=6032076 ) and Chief Ladiga Trails ( http://epic.jsu.edu/clt/ ). These Rail Trails are supposed to finally be connected and complete. I have not been up there to see for myself yet but after reading the reviews it seems like they are. I know of 2 campgrounds along the trail and one just off of the trail not far from Rockmart ( http://www.pathfoundation.org/pathfoundationfiles/TripGuide.pdf) plus, I'm quite sure with a bit of ingenuity ...

scratching the itch - Albany

This is a new concept, just born today. I wrote in the other forum, and on a blog, about the urge to tour. I have the freedom right now (layoff), no one is buying my time. I have had the impulse for years - just get out, GO, tour, carry your gear, and see how far you can go. We all share the continental dream, so few actually get to do it.

I was writing to a treasured friend in Albany today, and the light went off. Why not? Milwaukee, survive the urban megapolis (Chicago), and ...

Tammany Trace

One of our favorite weekend getaways is The Tammany Trace http://www.tammanytrace.org/ in Louisiana. It's a 31 mile Rail Trail that cuts right through Fountainbleu State Park in Mandeville, Louisiana http://www.crt.state.la.us/Parks/ifontaine.aspx and is located along the banks of Lake Pontchartrain (across from New Orleans). Some great pictures of the Trace can be found here http://www.traillink.com/ViewTrail.aspx?AcctID=6015938

If you are looking for a wonderful self contained tour or just a lot of scenic miles the Natchez Trace http://www.scenictrace.com/ is a great place to ride a bicycle.

I have ridden sections and side trips (Vicksburg Battlefield)off of the Trace but I have yet to ride it end to end. I'm planning to rectify that this year. There are campgrounds along the way plus a variety of scenic stops. Here is just one of the journals from CGOAB (Crazy guy on a bike for those not familiar) that outlines the ...

la Route verte

This http://www.routeverte.com/rv/index_e.php has been on my radar for quite some time and is someplace I want to ride. Has anyone done this or have any knowledge of it? It's just another one of the reasons I've been studying French for the past year. Whenever I do go ride it, I want to try and converse in the language if possible, plus, I just like the French language.

If you enjoy rides seeped in history then you don't want to miss the Colonial Parkway http://www.nps.gov/colo/parkway.htm in Virginia. This is another scenic drive that is closed to commercial traffic and traverses an area rich in American History. From Colonial Jamestown with the three ships Discovery, Godspeed and Susan Constant to the Battlefield at Yorktown http://www.nps.gov/york/ This whole area is a very special place.

Withlacoochee State Trail

The Withlacoochee Trail is presently the longest paved rail trail in Florida at 46 miles in length. The trail runs from Dunnellon through Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties. Through small towns, ranches, and natural areas as it makes its way to just North of Dade City and Hwy 301. The trail traverses a region that offers many other outstanding recreational opportunities. Among the recreational highlights nearby are the unpaved trails in the Croom area of the Withlacoochee ...

It's a great self-contained trip. Numerous campsites along the way and some breathtaking scenery.
