Curious to know how many people are using GPS on their bikes. The techy side of me likes the toy aspect. The simplistic side of me thinks it's just another toy, too much information, more than I'll ever use, certainly. What are your thoughts?

I know of half a dozen guys that ride with GPS and I would guess that they have there advantages but IMO there a liitle overkill for cycling use unless you were going to do a lot of touring. I suppose if you do a lot of organized rides into areas you don't know it mite be useful. Any information I need or would want I can get off my computer.

Had a Garmin 305 for about a month. Too much information that I would never use. It didn't have an on board map which is a feature I would have liked. Never used the heart rate monitor or the cadence counter. A buddy that I ride with all the time just got a 605, I'll give you a report after I've seen it.

The GPS with a map can come in very handy.
I have a friend with a Garmin 705 and, on a rally, a group missed a turn and got really, really lost.
He pushed the "return to start" setting and the GPS took them back without a hitch.
You can also preload a route into the GPS and it will tell you every turn ahead.
My opinion:
I have a 605 and a Vista. The Vista is cheaper and works much better and is more useful than the 605.

I have a garmin etrex legend handheld that was a gift a few years ago. I like it on the handlebar even on local riding. It tells me all the details when I get back home like how long, far, fastest, avg speed, etc. Also a map so I can wander about. The thing just clips on and doesn't get in the way or weigh much. Just handy.

Y'all are more high-tech than I'm ready for. I have a fold-up street map of Newberry County that I keep in a waterproof bag in my trailer...

I have an old Garmin 12 that I use. It doesn't have maps or talk, but I can preload routes, or capture a route and upload to my computer. As others have said, it also records speed, average speed, distance. I like it because I don't have to mess with sensors or wires, just slap it on and go.

I love my Garmin ETrex Vista. Using it as a computer, I can put it on any bike and not worry about wheel size. I can download maps of my rides, I can find myself if I get a bit disoriented. When I tour I can find campgrounds, stores, parks and motels. For a diversion I can use it for Geocacheing.
Y'all are right, at first it was a lot of information I never thought I'd use but after using it I found that I really liked all of the extra "stuff" available.
If you're interested you can find a good tutorial here http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=3Tzut&doc_id=3140&v=GP&term=using%20gps&context=all

I just got a 305
No maps, and yes, it can be TMUi, but overall cheers
the fact that you download it and then see how you did is a big plus.
You can also move from bike to bike without reclabriation
