PostSubject: Luxury Bike Parking   Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:43 pm

Recently, I've read some horror stories about bike commuters who are losing their bicycles to theft or damage as a result of being forced to park them outside in an unsecured area. I realized that I have it extremely lucky with the arrangement I have with my employer.

Here's my EZ Sport, Bluetiful, parked at my office, in my ...
Luxury Bike Suite

This room used to be an office, but it was too close to the exit door to the hallway for anybody to get any work done (it is a main route to the restroom, and people are coming and going constantly past this opening). The door is just to the right of a wall which is seen as that white triangle on the right side of the picture.

So this room has been converted to a sort of meeting room by removing the desk and putting in a small, round conference table and chairs (on the left side of this picture) and that mobile white board you see right behind Bluetiful.

Since the door to the hallway is always locked to anyone but company employees, and since the room is used very infrequently, and since our company is big on promoting alternative modes of transportation, I have struck a deal with our office manager to use this room to park my steed. There is enough space here for another employee to park their bike next to mine. The room is so comfy, it even has better carpeting in it than I have in my own office!

An added bonus to this setup is that I empty my panniers into the black stuff sack you see on the seat of Bluetiful, exit out that door to the hallway, walk another hundred feet and I'm at the showers of my gym.

What is bike parking like for all you other commuters?

I park my bike in the back hallway of the Emergency Room or else in one of the back rooms where we used to have a makeshift gym. I could park it right outside the door by the ambulance bay too. In fact when I'm working nights I sometimes do that and whenever we slow down`around 2-3 in the morning I'll go for a short ride out around the hospital. Luckily working at a military installation (Eglin Air Force Base) I don't really have to worry about theft.

I have to park outside we have had good weather lately but today it’s raining on my Sofrider. Crying or Very sad
There is a gate you have to pass to get in here I haven’t heard of anyone that has had their bike stolen bike here at work.
I have to remember to remove the seat pads so they are dry when I ride home.
I have taken my unicycle in to my office when I have used it to work it doesn’t’ need much space.
So far nobody at work has asked to test ride my unicycle. Question

I would if I worked with you. That's one thing I've never been able to ride very far and when I have ridden one I really wobble affraid . It actually pretty funny to watch crash laughing. I'd love to know if there's a secret or is it just tons and tons of practice? scratch What's the secret?

My method was to use crutches (ones that you use your hands and support your forearm) then it was easy to balance.
I could stand still with the crutches then lift them up start pedaling and just put them down when I lost balance.

I used just a few minutes each day I practiced and eventually I was able to ride longer and longer.
It took some months before I could ride without the crutches. I never fell when I used the crutches.
My first rides I have never sweated as much as any other activity I have done.
If you’re cold this is the ride. Very Happy

The seat isn’t very comfortable but it reminds me why I got a recumbent.

I am fascinated by unicycles, but I don't have the balance for them.

The company I work for has a huge truck shop adjacent to my office. I have my very own parking spot inside and away from the elements.

The company I work for has a shelter for motorcycle parking, and I park under it. Lady Blue provides quite a contrast to the assorted Harleys and CBRs occupying the shelter - a rose amongst the thorns, as it were. queen
