Have you ever wondered how much you save by bicycling to work? Although there are a bunch of them out there, this http://www.kiplinger.com/tools/bike/ is the most accurate one I've found. According to their site here is the methodology they use.

"The per-mile cost of driving to work is 55 cents, including gasoline, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, according to the IRS' 2009 standard mileage rates. Actual rates may vary by vehicle.

The per-mile cost of biking is 9.6 cents and includes maintenance and depreciation, based on interviews with U.S. cycling organizations and previously published research, most notably from Road Kill: How Solo Driving Runs Down the Economy.

Monthly parking fees are broken down to a per-day average on the basis of 19.3 workdays per month, a figure derived from Bureau of Labor Statistics guidelines."

Of course sheer numbers don't define all of the benefits to commuting but I find them kind of fun play with now and again.

So, if I take 9.6¢ from 55¢, I get a savings of 45.4¢ a mile when I bike commute.

Since I average a 16 mile round trip to work, and commute by bike two times a week for 32 miles, that means I save almost $14.53 a week when I bike commute.

OMG! That's better than the cost of lottery tickets and a six-pack of Blue Moon! Maybe I'll start riding THREE days a week!
