Boy, I hear that. I have a lunch time meeting most Fridays, and the major intersection near the restaurant is like a demolition derby some Fridays! affraid

I'm retired, but I've been known to 'commute' to the local Turkish coffee shop. I've had it with the mobs of people at St*rb*cks.

Yes, I commute, 3-4 days a week. See my "Carolina Commute" threads for photos, especially the "v 2.0" thread. With a ride like that, commuting is a pleasure.

I had been thinking about doing a partial commute when the weather got a little cooler. Drive part way in and cycle the rest then reverse on the way home. I just found out I'm not allowed to cycle on the Space Center at certain times. I would have to come in to work 1 hour early, probably not a bad idea, I could stop at the gym & take a shower but I would have to wait an extra 3 hours before I could leave for home. Evil or Very Mad

Wow, Pete, have they given any reason for prohibiting bicycling at certain times?

I know my Dad had a bicycle he used to run around the Goodyear Aerospace plant out in Litchfield, Arizona. He always said he didn't think he'd be able to make it through the day without that bike.

The official document states:
Effective immediately, the following are implemented per KNPR 1600.1, Chapter 19 for those riding Bicycles on Kennedy Space Center:
Bicycles are prohibited on primary roadways from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Bicycle riders must comply with the provisions of Florida State Statute 316.2065.
* Bicycle riders should follow the same rules regarding driving a motor vehicle.
* Stay on the right side of the roadway along the curb or near the pavement edge.
* Helmets applicable to age 16 and younger.
* Must have lights during the hours of darkness.
* Keep two hands on the handlebars.
* Must have adequate brakes to stop bicycle.

Bicycle Safety
KSC Employees and Contractors are reminded that KNPR 1600.1, Chapt 19, (para G), states bicycles are prohibited from operating on primary roadways (SR 3, SR 405, SR 402, SR 406) during peak traffic hours, 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. - 6 p.m., for the rider's safety. Bicycle riders are also reminded that Florida State Statute 316.2065 also applies and the same basic rules that apply to motor vehicle drivers are applicable to bicycles and riders, regarding lights, brakes, stopping, yielding right of way, staying on right side of roadway, etc.

I think the times are a little long. Most people are at work by 8 and off by 5. I have driven these roads during rush hour and would not want to ride a bike then but I was going to try it on a Sunday, I work Sunday - Thursday. I may call security to see if it's O.K. on weekends or if it's 7 days a week.

Pete:

I know a lot of universities, large manufacturers and even some city complexes have implemented no-motorized traffic lanes or entire streets throughout their vast campuses for safety and traffic congestion reasons.

It's a little disheartening to see the KSC take the shortsighted route of just banning bikes altogether at certain times. That's too bad.
