I am a trustee on a joint committee created by the city of Wayland and Wayland Township, both of which are located half way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan which is planning to build a rail trail connecting the rail trail complex centered on the Grand Rapids and points north and west with the complex running from South Haven through Kalamazoo to Battle Creek and maybe on to Jackson. Our trail will be built on the old Interurban light rail right of way that is owned by Consumers Energy. We are currently waiting for Norfolk & Southern

to agree to let us reconstruct the missing bridge over their right of way. Once we get that we will be able to lease the right of way and begin to get the final local funding {a major portion of it will come from the city and township's parks and recreation funds} to meet the local matching funds to get the state and national grants which provide the majority of the funding. We are in the process of setting up a tax free fund for private donations. If we are successful the path will eventually be about 35 to 40 miles long and will complete the network that Michigan Trails and Greenways and the state are developing here in Michigan. This occupies my time in the summer when we are at our summer home here in Michigan.
