Here is the question. When you ride your recumbent on a rail-trail and come to a cross street with a stop-sign, do you always stop because the sign is there? Or, do you see that no car is too close and you pound on the pedals and go rolling through with no stop at all?.....

We don't have rail trails with crossings (yet). However, on city streets, I do rolling stops. If I can see clearly there are no cars in any direction, I'll blow through the stop altogether. If I don't have a clear visual, I slow to where I could stop, then roll through. If there are cars present, I stop.

Stop lights, I always stop for. If I cannot trigger a green and it cycles through a couple times, I will wait until the coast is clear and roll.

This is just my procedure. Don't do what I do and blame me if you get a ticket. Truthfully, though.... I accidentally did a rolling stop in front of a cop and he didn't even give me a hard look.

I think that's a good question. I also think it depends a lot on the Trail you're riding, it also for me depends on what style bike I'm riding.
I ride some trails that are mostly out in the country through management areas ( hunting reserves) like our Withlacoochee Trail or the Van fleet, I also ride trails like the Pinellas Trail that goes through Tampa and Clearwater with lots of traffic so it depends.
Actually if there is a stop sign you should stop, but I'd guess that the majority of riders will do rolling stops.

I asked the question because I was pretty sure I knew what everyone was going to say. Trail riders whether they be diamond frame riders or bent riders all ride trails the same way. We slow, and then go....

Here is an interesting thing I've found to be true. I've ridden with few guys who only ride on the same rail-trail I ride. Let's say they usually average 12 or so mph on the trail. I've told them that I'll take you to a place to ride, and your speed will increase by at least two mph...... Guaranteed!..... They always say no way....

It never fails, I take them to a spot I have out in the country, 1 stop sign, the rest is just go time. They are all amazed at their average speed jump on their cycle computers...... Then they all say, wait a minute, we never have to slow down..... I just smile!..

We’ve got some trails around here where there are stop signs for very small streets, not much more than driveways. For those I slow enough to make sure nobody’s coming and blow through. Larger intersections I slow enough that I can stop quickly if I misjudge how fast a vehicle is moving towards me. Stop signs crossing major roads I always stop for. I also stop for red lights. Fortunately around here if there’s a light there is probably a crosswalk so you can activate the light with a button.

Exception: When riding with a small group of friends, the leader will slow for a stop sign, if it’s clear he will yell “CLEAR” and I’ll blow through the sign. I do make sure the leader is not listed as beneficiary on my life insurance policy. Laughing

Racer,

Are you the same Racer that belongs to the CFRR group that was going to do the Van Fleet this weekend.

Yep, that's me. I work at the Space Center and the guy who is supposed to cover for me on my days off, took vacation this weekend. Mad Going to try for next weekend.
