Yeah, but not all that long ago, Adventure Cycling took it on the chin from the trikers because they insinuated a trike might not be the ideal touring cycle. Shocked Yeah, that was ugly.

The funny thing about it is; it goes right back to being a statement made out of ignorance. You can search crazyguy journals and see that people do tour on trikes. But, if you had no experience and you were trying to summarize the perfect touring vehicle, I could see discounting trikes. But, even just an ignorant statement like that is all it takes to fire off a butt-hurt firestorm! What a Face

A point lost in all of this is that magazines are sooo last millenia.

It is forum's like this, and other sites on the web that are the mag's of the new era.

And you can create a forum for left handed bagpipe repairmen if you want, the internet is all about niche's.

I belong to RV forums that are for owners of particular types of travel trailers, and I belong to RV forums for all forms of RVing.

I'm also into model railways, there you find discussions about which scale you are into, which railway, which continent, etc.

So let the old mags go their old way (of articles about what their advertisers want to see articles about) and we can bravely go where no recumbent unicycle has gone before.

( I wonder if anyone has ever build a recumbent unicycle???)

Shocked Well, that sorta ends the whole debate, now doesn't it? Wink

+1, I read a lot of different non-cycling forums... Great sources of information, but you do have to sort through a significant amount of BS. Perch a guy behind a monitor and after a few hundred posts, alluvasudden, he's a guru. Embarassed

Mark:

"smoking roadies" ... Okay, Embarassed , guilty as charged. But I find it hard to believe that ANYBODY could mistake my ribbing as anything other than good natured trash talking in the spirit of camaraderie.

If they DO, don't you think they are taking their particular brand of bicycling WAY too seriously, and missing the big picture of respect for ALL bicyclists?

I mean, hell, if we can't joke with our fellow bicyclists, don't you think we ALL run the risk of NOT being taken seriously because we are taking ourselves too seriously?

I know, I know, the first thing that someone will say is "Hey, BluesCat, don't you think YOU are taking this whole thing too seriously by criticizing Bicycling magazine for the lack of a single recumbent in their Buyer's Guide?" To which I'll respond "Okay, okay, I'll shut up as long as in the 2010 Buyer's Guide the kid's tricycle you include in the list has a Titanium frame, a set of Zipp 1080 wheels, Shimano Deore XT Disc Brakes and a Brooks Saddles Swallow Classic Ti!"

Here's an interesting article on the history of recumbents, and how it came to pass that they're not considered to be 'bicycles'.

I've never smoked a roadie. How do you keep it lit?

I don't know about smoking them but if you pedal just a wee bit faster than them and keep them just far enough behind to not get a good draft, it sure fires them up! Especially if they can see you smiling into your mirror Twisted Evil

I passed a guy in full roadie kit going up Greenspot Sunday. When I say "passed", I mean blew by. I said "Good morning!" in my usualy cheerful tone and I could hear the gasp of exasperation as he responded. Roadies do NOT like to be passed by recumbents and racer wannabees don't like to be passed by anybody. Mind you, I took no personal pleasure from it (not much, anyway Twisted Evil ). I came up on another roadie in full racer kit and he would have NOTHING to do with me passing him. We were on a downhill and he was pushing hard to stay ahead. I ran him up to about 25 feathering my brakes as I enjoyed watching him work to stay slightly ahead. I could have toasted him at anytime on the downhill, but it was fun watching the guy sweat me. We turned off and went down another street and he crossed our paths again sometime later. Once again, he kicked it up a notch to stay ahead. This time, I got right on his wheel and as I sat back there, taking it easy while he worked pretty hard, I started singing the theme song for "The Jeffersons". No reasoning, other than to let him know I had way more to give. I don't care for smoking roadies, but I do like to torment them when I can.
