Arizona has a 3-foot law also. I do not know if it is very effective.
I had several friends who graduated high school with me in '68, did not go to college but directly into the military service. One of them was killed in action; one stepped on a Bouncing Betty and lost his left leg below the knee and his left arm at the elbow; two came back with substance abuse problems as a result of their "Vietnam Experience"; one finished his military service in Germany, married a girl there and stayed there; one made a career of the military after Vietnam, he died a few years ago of cancer he always suspected was caused by Agent Orange.
I dropped out of college after one year, was reclassified 1A from 1S, and I waited. I was 340 in the first lottery.
I went to work for a big Architectural/Engineering firm in 1970, who designed and construction managed various facilities for the military, including secure hospitals for the Air Force. I wore my hair down to the middle of my back, and when I would go onto a military base I would always get grief from the MP's and sometimes from some of the other personnel there. However, no one ever took me up on my invitation to step OFF the base, lose the uniform, and discuss whether "I was a girl or a boy."
Yup, I smoked dope. Had a good time doing it, but around 1975 I "became a man" and "put away childish things." Went back to school and have worked ever since.
