Part of the 17-point "Green Phoenix" plan Mayor Phil Gordon is announcing includes a heavy dose of improvements to the city's bicycling infrastructure:

Green Phoenix Announcement

This is good news, because it means great improvements to the city's extensive, multi-use irrigation canal system which will allow cyclists to avoid a lot of heavy traffic.

Why do cyclists in Phoenix ride in canals? Does it share common reasoning with the lack of daylight saving time there?

I did read the first installments with great interest, as I like to see what others are doing. It's kind of like a travelogue. I wish our trails were that challenging. The most challenging part for me, on our rails to trails trail, is getting past Team Wal-mart. Last Saturday I had to pass 4 of them standing abreast at the stop sign sipping water. I slowed down a bit and headed for the grass shoulder. I guess we're lucky that the roads around here have lines painted on them. Or else, it would be like trying to drive around the main square in any town in Mexico. No lane distinction applies.

Back to the multi-use canal. Does that mean that you can swim and fish as well as ride in the canals?

We got REALLY lucky with our Wal-Mart a half mile north of my house: It's in the same shopping center as a Home Depot! I hate Wal-Mart, but every once in a while I need something from Home Depot, and driving up there --- and running the gauntlet of day laborers --- is like a visit to a foreign country.

You wouldn't want to swim in the Phoenix canals, or ride IN them: the water is pretty deep and it's running really fast. I have seen kids fishing in them, but I'm not sure of any success they have had.
