PostSubject: $54 tax on bicycles?   Mon Mar 09, 2009 4:36 pm

Up in Oregon, there is a proposal in the legislature suggesting a biannual, $54 "registration fee" on bicycles:

Bike Registration Proposal

wtf I thought we already paid for this with our taxes?

What type of BS is that Question Do you really think they can get that crap passed Mad Hell I don't pay that for my Truck registration. Sounds like Rep. Wayne Krieger is making a pocket full to me. Wait what about trikes, there three wheels not two we can ride for free.

I don't think it will ever fly. For one thing, the police have way too much to do already without pulling over every adult bicyclist to make sure their papers are in order.

That being said, while I believe this particular bill to be ridiculous, I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of fee if it went toward real cycling facility improvements above and beyond those already budgeted and paid for with our taxes.

I think next, they should charge a road usage tax on the sale of running shoes and you should have to pay an evironmental disposal fee when you trade in your old ones.Twisted Evil

I would agree to some kind of tax that would go toward improving bicycle routes. That is creation of bike lanes, shoulder maintenance, new bike paths, etc. This would also benefit auto drivers as $$$ replaced by this tax would allow them to spend on fixing the car lanes.

Willing to give some for our benefit.

In addition, I think fines that are levied on four-wheeled, non-human powered vehicles when they cut off, clip with mirrors and bumpers, or simply just run us over should go toward mandatory education classes on sharing the road! (Like that will ever happen!)

The big problem I see is the money wouldn't go for what they say, it never does. They always find excuses for using the money in other places and guess who gets left out. Besides the fact that all the bill would do discourage people from bicycling. Besides as someone else stated we already pay tax dollars for this stuff.
